Background of the Study
Economic recessions are known to trigger adverse mental health outcomes, particularly in vulnerable communities (Oghenevwogaga, 2023). In Ughelli North, the downturn in economic activities has resulted in widespread job losses, financial instability, and increased stress levels among residents (Ede, 2024). Recent research indicates that economic hardships often lead to heightened levels of anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders (Amadi, 2023). The interplay between economic conditions and mental health is complex, with factors such as social support and community resilience playing moderating roles (Ighodaro, 2025). This study examines the multifaceted impact of economic recession on mental health, exploring both individual and communal responses to financial distress (Onyekachi, 2023). It aims to identify patterns of psychological vulnerability and coping mechanisms, thus providing insights into effective mental health interventions during periods of economic instability (Nkemdilim, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
The economic recession in Ughelli North has led to a noticeable deterioration in mental health among residents, yet systematic research on this phenomenon is limited (Ikechukwu, 2023). Financial insecurity and job losses have exacerbated stress and mental health disorders (Obi, 2024). The lack of robust data on the correlation between economic downturn and psychological well-being hampers the development of targeted mental health support systems (Okoro, 2023). This study seeks to address these gaps by investigating the direct and indirect effects of economic recession on mental health.
